Welcome to the U.S Court of Appeals for the Armed
Forces Electronic Filing System
In May of 2003
the Court launched
its pilot “E-Filing” program to begin
accepting electronically filed motions. Its intent was to evaluate the
feasibility of accepting electronically filed pleadings, the effect on
the current docketing process, and the support by counsel. Phase I of
the program limited filings to motions for extensions of time. In turn,
these types of pleadings flowed easily into the Court's case management
system and automated the communication between Court staff and counsel.
Notifications, acceptance, and/or rejection of e-filings could be
accomplished with automated e-mail to both parties and therefore
provide timely information with no additional burden on Court staff.
The pilot program was undertaken with the expectation the Court would eventually expand the system to accept more complex types of pleadings. With its popularity and usage increasing, electronic filing at the Court has proven to be successful both with Court staff and counsel. For this reason, it is time to expand our electronic filing capabilities and accept nearly all types of motions and electronic briefs.
In addition to motions for extension of time, we are now capable of accepting motions to attach and motions to substitute pages, among other new capabilities. Electronic briefs and appendices will also be a welcome addition to assist in moving information within the Court. Our new capacity enhances our ability to receive pleadings 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
We encourage you to participate in this program. It is simple, timely, and effective. All you need is your Internet browser and the ability to produce a PDF-formatted file. Learn how to register by reading the instructions page. If you have questions, turn to the FAQ's page or contact us to learn more.
